LOS RANCHOS DE ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (PRWEB) September 22, 2022

After several years of unprecedented challenges in the hospitality industry, Los Poblanos is excited to announce a major expansion into gin distillation with Los Poblanos Botanical Spirits. In connection with the distillery, Los Poblanos is opening new tasting rooms and retail destinations in both downtown Albuquerque and downtown Santa Fe.

After years of exploring the possibility of distilling spirits to complement their botanical and essential oil distillation operations, this project brings that vision to fruition with the combination of the right location, timing, and community support. These new investments allow for sustainable business growth without compromising the original Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm in Los Ranchos’ North Valley.

Los Poblanos Botanical Spirits Los Poblanos has been growing and distilling botanicals on their historic farm in the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque for over two decades. The new botanical gins were thoughtfully developed by a diverse team skilled in the kitchen and on the farm, familiar with the nuances of distillation, mixology and more. As a New Western Dry gin, the familiar juniper notes move into the background and an array of regional botanicals come forward to express the flavors of New Mexico’s Rio Grande Valley and high desert landscape.

“The farm team worked closely with the spirits team to research botanicals growing on the property,” said Wes Brittenham, Director of Horticulture. “Farm Manager Maxfield Bervig developed a gin flavor wheel highlighting our earthy, floral, spicy and bitter botanicals. Lead Distiller Jamie Lord narrowed the list as taste testing progressed, adding just the right amount of earthy piñon resin to pull together all the notes of Los Poblanos.”

Born on the farm and distilled in downtown Albuquerque, Los Poblanos’ signature Western Dry is smooth and complex, distilled with sixteen botanicals that thrive on their small organic farm and surrounding area including piñon, rose, hawthorn and chamomile. With acres of lavender fields forming the cornerstone of their agricultural preservation project, the new line also includes a lavender gin. This singular blend highlights the soothing medicinal and aromatic properties of lavender with the complexity of four varietals to transport you to the fields of Los Poblanos.

“The development process was incredibly collaborative,” said Dylan Storment, Director of Wine and Spirits. “It was such a unique experience to work with all aspects of the property and different areas of expertise to create formulas that really capture a sense of place.”

The distillery is a direct outgrowth of Los Poblanos’ essential oil distillation and artisan product wholesale business. With the event of Covid-19 and all the challenges that came with it, Los Poblanos’ small inn, onsite restaurant and private events business dried up. It was the value-added products that truly carried the business through. By pivoting to focus on growing e-commerce and wholesale, they retained the majority of their staff throughout Covid and saw the opportunity to expand.

“Our team has been extremely nimble and willing to adapt. Covid forced us to innovate to survive. We’ve taken a risk and bit off a lot – moving production and opening a distillery and two new retail and bar locations simultaneously, but it’s the right thing to do for the business,” said Executive Director Matt Rembe.

As production and storage needs outgrew the historic facilities in the Village of Los Ranchos, operations were initially moved into a windowless off-site warehouse that met the needs of their growing business but did little to inspire. When the historic warehouse on 4th Street just north of Mountain Rd. became available, they knew it was the right time to take out a loan and invest in an appropriate building. This was possible with support from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Economic Development and LEDA funding to create jobs and catalyze economic development. “It was encouraging to get support from the state on a project we know will have an impact on the community,” said Rembe. “With the level of investment in the historic building towards adaptive re-use, it made economic sense to use it for more than production and storage.” The LP Warehouse also houses the distillery and Town and Ranch tasting room and retail space.

Town and Ranch, 1318 4th St. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102 Located near downtown Albuquerque on 4th St. just north of Mountain Rd., Town and Ranch at the LP Warehouse is home to Los Poblanos’ distillery, a tasting room with signature cocktails and new retail space. When Los Poblanos moved their lavender product production to the historic 1940s Heaston’s Town and Ranch Tractor Supplies building, it was a natural fit to move goods straight from production to the shelves. Historic preservation and adaptive reuse are built into Los Poblanos' mission, and they applied the same model in this renovation as with their historic dairy buildings on the farm. The name Town and Ranch is a nod to the original building and celebrates the connection between this urban satellite and the original Los Poblanos Ranch in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Los Poblanos was able to replicate the original neon signage from the 1940s.

Los Poblanos distills lavender essential oil from the fields on-site at the Farm every summer, but the LP Warehouse is where their soaps and oil-based lavender products come together, including the popular lavender salve and handmade soaps. Items from their Farm Foods line are processed onsite including salt and herb blends, heritage flour and wheat berries in collaboration with the Southwest Grains Collective.

Town and Ranch is a Downtown destination featuring the new Los Poblanos Botanical Spirits gin, on-site distillation, New Mexican beers, wine and spirits, artisanal market foods and housewares and their complete line of Los Poblanos lavender apothecary and Farm Foods products. For years, customers have wanted an option to re-fill lavender products and buy in bulk, and this new space will offer eco-friendly options for locals. The Farm Foods section provides a much-needed oasis in the surrounding food desert for Downtown residents.
