Scandinavian Enviro Systems has received an order for 60 metric tons of recovered carbon black from a major European tire manufacturer in the premium segment. The tire maker plans to use the carbon black for production tests, as a step toward increasing the proportion of recovered and renewable materials in its tires.

The tire manufacturer has worked with Enviro for several years and has conducted a number of minor production tests using the recovered carbon black. The order is the tire manufacturer’s first for use in more comprehensive production tests, and will be supplied by recovered carbon black produced at Enviro’s plant in Åsensbruk, Sweden.

The manufacturer has previously announced ambitious sustainability goals, including half of all raw material included in new tires to be recovered or renewable by 2030. A number of other tire makers, including Enviro’s primary owner Michelin, have announced similarly ambitious goals for increased use of recovered or renewable materials.

In September, Enviro became the first company in the world to become certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) system for carbon black. At the same time, Enviro also obtained ISCC certification for the pyrolysis oil that the company recovers from end-of-life tires. To meet the expected increase in demand for recovered carbon black and recovered pyrolysis oil, Enviro has announced a plan to establish recycling plants for end-of-life tires with a total capacity of 900,000 metric tons by 2030.
