ASHLAND — The Ashland County Solid Waste District disposed of more than 5,000 agricultural tires at its last event, according to district numbers.

Jim Skora, the solid waste district manager, gave the Ashland County Board of Commissioners an update on the county’s overall recycling program on Thursday, along with a tally on farm equipment tires that were collected in late August as part of its event at the fairgrounds.

In all, there were 96 farms that participated in the program. Collectively, they threw out 5,055 tires, which ended up weighing 596,000 pounds — or 298 tons.

There were 19 total trailer loads as part of the program. The tires went to Willig Tire Recycling in Galion. Skora said the event was a big success, and ended up costing $74,900.

Most of that cost will be covered through an Ohio EPA grant the district received earlier this year. Also, the district charged $1 per tire, bringing in just over $5,000.

For future reference, Skora said he would consider increasing the price per tire to be able to cover the cost involved with a farm equipment tire collection event.

The county’s residential tire program, which launched last October, has generated 498 car tires, 909 truck tires and 43 other tires with an estimated 77,098 pounds collected. The program, to date, has cost the district $8,394.
