Recycling company Scandinavian Enviro Systems has been accredited under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme for the recovery of oil and carbon black at the company’s tire plant in Åsensbruk, Sweden.

The ISCC certification means that a product or material has received a sustainability declaration based on the total energy consumption used to produce it over the entire value chain. ISCC is based on the European environmental directive Red II and was developed to help the transition toward a more sustainable and circular energy sector.

The accreditation makes Enviro the first company to have been awarded such a certification for recovered carbon black. The firm will be reviewed each year to ensure it still meets ISCC standards.

“The certification is a milestone in the company’s development as it means that it will be easier for our customers to achieve their sustainability targets using our oil and carbon black,” explained Thomas Sörensson, CEO of Enviro Systems. “As a result, the customer benefit and commercial value of our technology and products will become even clearer.”

Following the certification, the recovered pyrolysis oil from Enviro’s plant can now be sold in the EU and the UK as a raw material to produce sustainable fuels.

Within the tire sector, many manufacturers have set high targets for recovered and recycled materials to be used within production processes, and this includes carbon black.

“The automotive and tire industries are demonstrating a clear commitment to coming as close to zero as possible in terms of negative environmental impact and in this work, every single step and every individual component plays a crucial role. Recovered carbon black will be one of several important elements in this endeavor,” said Fredrik Olofsson, sales manager at Enviro.
